Armenia, Artsakh mark 28th anniversary of earthquake

GYUMRI, STEPANAKERT—Solemn ceremonies took place in Gyumri and Stepanakert on Wednesday to commemorate the 28th anniversary of the 1988 Spitak earthquake, killing 25,000 citizens.

Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan paid a visit to Gyumri to take part in a ceremony at the memorial dedicated to the earthquake victims.

Karapetyan along with cabinet members and public figures laid wreaths and paid homage with a minute of silence.

The Prime Minister while in Gyumri also met with organizers of a housing construction project in Akhuryan for families who lost their homes in the disaster. One hundred four families will be living in three new apartments by the end of the year, reported Public Radio of Armenia.

In Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), a ceremony took place at the Stepanakert Memorial complex where President Bako Sahakyan laid a wreath at the monument, reported Artsakh’s presidential press service.

Community members and various government officials also took part in the event.
