The time has finally arrived! On Sunday the 29th of June 2014 the Hamazkaine Nairi Dance Group will be travelling to Yerevan, Armenia. The 40 man squad is to perform in the Arno Babajanian Concert Hall on the 6th of July with an expected audience of 400. Accompanying them will be 25 parents and friends of the dance group.

The Hamazkaine Nairi Dance Group will also be gracing the stage of the “Im Hayasdan” festival, which is hosted by the Armenian Ministry of Diaspora every 2 years.  This event involves Armenian choirs, theatric groups and dance ensembles from around the world coming together for 10 days and performing in the Yerevan Opera and Ballet Theatre, as well as various venues throughout Armenia.

The dance group will perform during the opening ceremony on the 1st of July, as well as at the village festival called “Kyoughi Dadig” at Oshagan Village on the 5th of July and at the closing ceremony on the 10th of July.

“I am so excited for the privilege to be travelling to my motherland with the Nairi Dance Group,” says junior dance member Anna Berberian. “We have been practicing for such a long time and this trip is like a dream come true.”

The Hamazkaine Nairi Dance Group has been preparing for this trip for the past 11 months, under the stark direction of concert coordinator and dance instructor Asadour Hajian. The talent and efforts of senior dance instructor Sona Khachatryan, dance instructor Lena Harapetian and costume coordinator Vehik Aroutinian have also made this trip a reality.

The dance group has also been supported by the Hamazkaine Nairi and Homenetmen Ararat chapters, as they have been planning and preparing for their trip.

“The Hamazkaine Nairi and Ararat chapter committees have been backing us morally and financially and without them we would not be able to embark on this exciting journey. We thank them so much for making this opportunity possible,” says Betty Marashlian who will be travelling to Armenia with her daughter, Nanar.

“Our dance group is so excited,” exclaims senior dancer Meghety Zaitounian. “We feel very proud to go and represent the Armenians of Sydney in Armenia. We want to dance and show that Armenian culture and music is alive in the far lands of Australia.”
