Armenian Film Festival 2017

SYDNEY: In 2017, the Armenian Film Festival will screen, on an unprecedented level, 16 films over 10 days, showcasing the best of Armenian inspired films from the international film industry. Featuring will be films from Armenia, Russia, USA, Turkey, France and Spain by both Armenians and non-Armenian filmmakers.

The Festival will debut on 18 August 2017 with a launch party on 19 August 2017 for the Australian Premiere screening of the hot new comedy, ARAJIN DEMQ (Head of State). The Festival will run for 10 days and will cater for all ages and all likes and interests, with the screening of documentaries, animations, selection of short films, blockbusters, dramas and comedies.

The films have been handpicked to showcase the rich Armenian culture, resilience, history talent and language and the Committee is thrilled to be screening the blockbuster, EARTHQUAKE, a 2016 Russian-Armenian drama about the devastating 1988 earthquake in Spitak, which was Armenia’s submission for 89th Academy Awards in the Foreign Language film category.

INTENT TO DESTROY, a behind-the-scenes documentary, which follows Terry George on set of THE PROMISE, made by Academy Award nominated film maker and documentarian Joe Berlinger, as he meets with historians and scholars to discuss the Armenian Genocide.

An encore, due to popular demand, the French film DON’T TELL ME THE BOY WAS MAD, which can only be described as a compelling and emotional drama setting out the enduring impact of the Armenian genocide which has passed from survivors to their descendants.

For the children (or the inner child in all of us), the Festival will bring to Australian screens ANAHIT, a classic Armenian tale in animation, and LOST BIRDS,  the first film made in Turkey about the Armenian Genocide and made through the point of view of children.

In honour of the 25th Anniversary of the liberation of Shushi, the festival will also screen KYANK U KRIV (The Line) 1 and the sequel KYANK U KRIV 2 (The Line 2: 25 years later) depicting the Artsakh independence war; the award winning documentary THE OTHER SIDE OF HOME, following the journey of an Armenian filmmaker and a Turkish woman who discovers her Armenian ancestry, a selection of short films, exciting festival guests….….and so much more!!.

All movies will be screened with English subtitles.

The festival takes place from 18 to 27 August, at Event Cinema Top Ryde. Tickets are on sale now.
