SYDNEY: Yerevan native playwright Narek Duryan's one man show C'est la Vie, which he will perform in Sydney next month, has enjoyed success during recent performances in Yerevan, Syria, Paris and Lebanon and Los Angeles.

The show, in which Duryan takes on several characters, has been so successful that it has been running for four years around the world, playing to packed houses.

Hamazkaine Shant Chapter in Sydney is bringing this witty yet poignant piece to the Sydney Armenian community.

Narek Duryan, son of the well renowned conductor Ohan Duryan, creates a character based on himself and tells his life story as he transitions from the restricted life of the Soviet era to the complicated abundance of the West.

Duryan skillfully tells his story with sophisticated humor touching on many life experiences of the diasporan Armenian. Engaging audiences from both Western and Eastern dialects, he weaves a narrative which rings true in all our hearts and makes us laugh at our own experiences.

"In this performance I study the question of personal freedom and what is freedom," the play's creator says. "It is a relative phenomenon. When was I more free, when I could not travel, for I was in a prison called Soviet country, but traveled around the world in my mind, or now, when I can go wherever I want, but I don't have money? This is also a kind of imprisonment, a jail."

The Armenian diaspora have taken notice of Duryan.

The French press and the cultural programs at the TF1 TV Company have covered the Armenian's performance. Elle a Paris writes: "With a great portion of sense of humor and deep observation Narek Duryan opened the closed curtains of the Soviets before us."
