SYDNEY: The motto 'To Lead is to Serve' was the central message that was given by His Eminence Archbishop Baliozian, Head of College Mrs Carolyn Blanden and Principal Baron Kaylar Michaelian at the Galstaun College Leadership Commissioning Service.
On 18th February, students, teachers, families and friends gathered for the formal commissioning of the Captains, Prefects and Student Representatives for 2010.
Mrs Blanden drew from the gospels to illustrate how Christ's life and teaching modeled leadership as serving with love and humility. She noted that Galstaun College has been built by the service of those who have gone before and will continue to flourish because of those who serve now and in the future.
The new College Captain, Anaheed Sarian affirmed in her response the great honour and responsibility that the Leadership Group were accepting and their determination to meet the challenges of the role in a manner which would benefit the students and provide a foundation on which future leaders could build.
Tamara Shamaon, the Captain of Karzou House gave an inspirational address in Armenian, outlining the responsibilities of the Leadership team in ensuring that the students were cared for and supported, and that they enjoyed their experience of being at the College.
Mr Michaelian referred to the College's recent celebration of Vartanants, urging the students to draw inspiration from wonderful Armenian leaders like St Vartan, encouraging them to look at Armenian history and draw inspiration from those leaders who made great sacrifices for the people they lead and the principles they espoused
His Eminence, Archbishop Baliozian referred to Christ's command to his followers that they should love and care for one another, just as he cares for us. He encouraged the student leaders to take responsibility for students their care.
A highlight of the service was a musical rendition of the Blessing, presented by the High School Choir and the Year 7 students, commencing with a solo from the College Captain, arranged and accompanied by the Head of Performing Arts, Miss Andrea Getley.
His Eminence blessed the badges, and the new leaders as they made their leadership pledge, then lead the College in singing the "Hayr Mer" (Lord's Prayer).
Families and friends joined the teachers and Board representatives in celebrating with the new Leaders with a special morning tea at the conclusion of the Ceremony.
