SYDNEY: On Sunday 2nd of November the Hamazkaine Armenian Sydney Dance Company (ASDC) held its 14th Annual Cultural Extravaganza, titled “Our Culture Our Legacy” at the Concourse Theatre, Chatswood.
This spectacular showcase saw the youth of the Armenian-Australian community, from as young as 4 years old, perform the traditional dance of their ancestors. Draped in traditional folk costumes, as well as modern and up-tempo attire, and dancing to traditional Armenian instruments such as the duduk, the up and coming generation of the Armenian-Australian community assured the audience of the longevity of the Armenian heritage, especially on the far away shores of Australia.
The young dancers were instructed by the dedicated and talented choreographers of the ASDC, whose artistic direction radiated the stage with stories of Armenia and unravelled the landscape and scenery of the motherland through their graceful and traditional dances . Anita Kherlopian, who has been part of the ASDC for 14 years, Angineh Karabedian, Gigo Giragosian and Collette Mardirosian were the choreographers.
As teachers of traditional Armenian dance, these choreographers play a huge role in carrying through the Armenian heritage, as this art form is a paramount gateway into the preservation of the Armenian heritage and legacy for future generations.
