Turkish hackers hit the Vatican’s website on Monday in an apparent retaliation for the pope’s remarks on Sunday, when he referred to the events of 1915 as “the first Genocide of the 20th century, reported the Hill.

Vatican.va was knocked offline by a denial-of-service attack on Monday night, according to reports, but restored by Tuesday morning. A Turkish hacker on Twitter took credit for the hit, demanding that the pope retract his comments, added the Hill.

The pope’s comments have angered Turkey prompting Ankara to recall its Vatican envoy and calling Francis’s remarks “slanderous.”
