Greek Parliament president receives European Armenian and ANC Greece delegation

BRUSSELS (EAFJD)—Zoe Konstantopoulou, president of the parliament of Greece, received a joint delegation of the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD) and the Armenian National Committee of Greece (ANC Greece) on Thursday. EAFJD President Kaspar Karampetian, ANC Greece Chairman Hagop Hovaguimian, and ARF – Dashnaktsutyun Greece representative Kerop Ekizian met with the parliamentary speaker. Secretary General Giorgos Thalassis of the Greek parliament was also present at the meeting.

Konstantopoulou reaffirmed that an exhibition will take place to commemorate the centenary of the Armenian Genocide at the Greek parliament in October, and that she looks forward to having Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Galust Sahakyan, as well as high ranking  Armenian and Greek officials, present at the opening of the exhibition. The Armenian delegation offered its readiness to assist in the realization of the exhibition.

The need to continue strengthening the good relations between Armenia and Greece were discussed, as well as the formation of a friendship group between Armenia’s and Greece’s parliaments. The joint EAFJD ANC-Greece delegation offered its help in this matter, too.

Issues faced by the Greek-Armenian community were also discussed, including the financial hardships that Armenian educational institutes face in Greece. Konstantopoulou promised to assist the community to find solutions so the schools can continue to operate.

Konstantopoulou again affirmed her recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the readiness of the Greek Parliament to assist the Armenian people in their struggle for justice.

An exchange of views took place in regard to the Greek financial crisis, as well as the reparations of Germany to Greece in regard to the damages inflicted on Greece during World War II.

Konstantopoulou was in Yerevan on April 24 for the official commemoration events of the Armenian Genocide. She met with ARF – Dashnaktsutyun bureau representatives during her visit.
