STEPANAKERT — According to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Defense Ministry, Artsakh Defense Army Private Artyom Varderesyan (b. 1996) was killed as a result of shelling from the Azerbaijani side earlier today. Investigation regarding the occurrence is under way.

The Artsakh Defense Ministry sends their condolences to the families and friends of the killed soldier.

The Azerbaijani side fired more than 400 shots in the direction of the Armenian positions last night.

The front divisions of Artsakh’s Defense Army mostly refrained from taking  retaliatory measures and confidently continued with their military duty all along the line of contact.

“The Azerbaijani side, which permanently undertakes assaults destabilizing the situation at the line of contact, continues to disseminate misinformation claiming that the Armenian forces opened fire in the direction of the Tapkarakoyunlu settlement targeting the houses and the village school,” the Karabakh Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The Ministry says the information spread by the Azerbaijani propaganda is nothing but deliberate provocation aimed at aggravating the situation at the frontline.

“The front divisions of the Artsakh Defense Army not only refrain from targeting civilian settlements, but also resort to retaliatory measures against Azeri forces only when needed in extreme cases,” the Ministry said in a statement.
