YEREVAN (Armenpress)—The formation of the Armenia-Russia joint air defense system does not deprive Armenia the independence to manage its own measures of air defense, said Deputy Defense Minister, Ara Nazaryan, during a Parliamentary discussion.
“Currently, Armenia is defending its air space with its measures. After the confirmation of this agreement, we will continue managing out air defense systems. However the Russian resources will be added to them,” Nazaryan said.
The Deputy Minister clarified that the agreement will give Armenia the opportunity to use Russia’s air defense measures, as well. “It is about UAVs, fighter aircraft, as well as about other weapon systems. We will use this as an additional resource to defend our air space,” he said.
However, the agreement on forming a joint air defense system between Armenia and Russia does not apply to Nagorno-Karabakh. “The agreement concerns Armenia and Russia only,” said Nazarian.
“We have our air defense measures for Nagorno-Karabakh, and we are the security guarantor of the state under our military doctrine. This agreement includes the entire airspace of Armenia,” he said.
The Deputy Defense Minister added that if the agreement signed within the framework of CIS related to only the external borders of CIS, then this agreement includes the entire air border of Armenia.
