Weightlifter Gor Minasyan wins Armenia’s third silver at Rio Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO—Gor Minasyan, 21, won Armenia’s third silver medal the 2016 Rio Olympics on Tuesday in the men’s +105kg weightlifting competition, lifting a combined total of 451 kg. In 2010, Minasyan won a silver medal at the Summer Youth Olympics.

Armenia’s Ruben Aleksanyan, 26, came in fourth place, lifting a combined total of 440 kg.

Georgian weightlifter Lasha Talakhadze, lifting 473 kg, and Irakli Turmanidze, lifting 448 kg, won gold and bronze respectively.

Earlier on Tuesday, Artur Aleksanyan, 24, became the first athlete to win a gold medal for the Armenia team, beating Cuba’s Yasmany Daniel Lugo Cabrera in the final round of  the men’s Greco-Roman 98 kg wrestling competition.

Fellow wrestler Migran Arutyunyan, 27, won a a silver medal in the men’s Greco-Roman 66 kg competition later that day.

Armenia’s first medal winner of the Rio Olympics was won by Simon Martirosyan, 19, weightlifting in the men’s 105 kg competition and placing second after Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Nurudinov.
