Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian presides over the UN General Assembly session on Thursday

UNITED NATIONS—Armenia chaired the Thursday session of the United Nations General Assembly, which convened Wednesday for its annual meeting. Armenia was represented by acting Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.

A number of heads of state spoke during Thursday’s session, among Latvian president Raimonds Vējonis who said that resolution of protracted conflicts, among the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict must remain a priority for the international body.

Armenia’s delegation, headed by Nalbandian, was on hand for the opening session Wednesday, which also coincided with the 25th anniversary of Armenia’s Independence.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, US President Barack Obama, President of Brazil Michel Temer, French President Francois Hollande, heads of other states delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.

The same day, Nalbandian participated in the Summit for Refugees initiated by Obama. The Summit was co-organized by leaders of Jordan, Mexico, Germany, Ethiopia, Sweden, Canada and UN Secretary-General.

The participants discussed ways to assist the refugees, the possibilities of assessing their needs and overcoming the migration crisis through joint efforts.
