SYDNEY: Saturday the 21st August saw the high school cast of the Galstaun College Musical spent the day with teachers Haig Lepedjian, Sally Band and Andrea Getley, helping design, draw, paint, mould and finalise the sets and props for the September production.

Head of Performing Arts Getley said: "All the students really took to the painting work, and they worked as a team to ensure that the steps, jack in the boxes and the brick walls were all painted neatly and colour coordinated."

Visual Arts teacher Lepedjian spent the entire morning cutting, pasting, designing brick work patterns and teaching students to sponge paint, and with a few musical hints from Getley, the year seven students designed the features to cover the brick wall.

Getley added: "The final result was incredible and once placed on the front flats on stage, will look like a genuine brick wall. Students took charge and made constant suggestions to improve the appearance of the artwork and were very proud of their achievements.

"Ms Band and myself helped the students paint the Jack-in-a-boxes, however, the colour design was all student work, and they worked hard to ensure that the painting was perfect and would look clear and stunning from a great distance.

"The same high level of commitment to perfection was demonstrated in the painting of the stage steps which are used in numerous numbers throughout the musical. Students ensured that no brush strokes could be seen by scrutinising their work constantly."

The day finished with a costume parade to ensure all students' costumes were finalised and ready to go, and then a run of Act One, minus the primary school numbers on the brand new stage extension which was designed and created by College parent Berj Ohanessian and his wonderful team from the Parents and Friends Association.
