YEREVAN—Armenia’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian hailed an agreement reached between Iran and the West over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, which promises to ease some of the economic sanctions placed on Iran by the international community.

 

“Armenia welcomes the framework agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, reached as a result of long lasting constructive efforts by Iran and international mediators …. that gives an opportunity to reach а comprehensive settlement. This will contribute to strengthening of stability and cooperation in the region,” Nalbandian said in a statement.

“This significant progress in the process of Iran’s nuclear issue resolution once again displays that it is possible to solve even the most complex issues through negotiations,” Nalbandian said.

Artsakh’s Foreign Minister Karen Mirzoyan also welcomed the deal in a separate statement, saying: “We welcome the framework agreement around the Iranian nuclear program and the parties’ commitment to reach a comprehensive settlement on its basis. We are convinced that this step will contribute to the efforts towards strengthening stability and security in the region.”

Iran and six world powers agreed to “key parameters” for a preliminary deal involving Tehran’s nuclear program on Thursday, following eight days of talks in Lausanne, Switzerland.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced the measure, saying enough progress had been reached to continue the negotiations until a final deadline of June 30.

The lifting of sanctions on Iran spells good news for Armenia, who relies on Iran as a major trading partner.
