Darchinyan suffers split decision loss to Mares

PanARMENIAN.Net - Vic Darchinyan and his team are planning to protest the split decision loss to Abner Mares at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington, boxingscene.com reported.

The fight was a semi-final bout in Showtime's bantamweight tournament. Two judges saw it for Mares with scores of 115-111 and 114-112. A third judge had it 115-111 for Darchinyan.

The score of 115-111 by judge Tom McDonough is under question by Darchinyan and his promoter Gary Shaw. They are not happy that McDonough scored the last seven rounds for Mares. Darchinyan had two 10-8 rounds with a knockdown in round two and a point taken away from Mares later in the fight for a foul. Mares scored a knockdown in round seven.

As part of the tournament, Darchinyan will now have to face Yonnhy Perez likely in March, and Abner Mares is going to fight Joseph Agbeko. Shaw plans to instruct his lawyers to send a protest to the Association of Boxing Commissioners, the State of Washington and the WBC and IBO.

"The best case is they rule it a no-contest or they would reverse the decision, we all know boxing, I don't know how hopeful that is," Shaw told WWOS.

"It's very disgusting," AP quoted Darchinyan as saying. "I think, of course, I won. By three to four rounds, I was in front."
