Armenia Online 2010: What Armenian-Australians read/viewed at armenia.com.au

Last year at this time, I wrote an article revealing your reading habits on armenia.com.au over 2009, and it ended up becoming one of the most widely-read articles in this website's short history.

Here is the 2010 edition!

In 2010, Armenia Online further established itself as the world's number one source for Armenian-Australian community news, as well as the number one Australian source for Armenian news from Armenia and around the world.

Over the last 12 months, the website has attracted over 40,000 visits and had over 105,000 of its pages viewed.

Armenia Online's email database numbers has increase by over 15%, and now numbers at over 3,500 subscribers, who receive Armenia Online's weekly newsletter 'Armenia Weekly' in their email inboxes every Tuesday (subscribe your friends by clicking here).

NOW WE PRESENT... the Armenia Online stories of the year, based on official readership figures compiled since January 1, 2010.

 

TOP STORY OF THE YEAR

The overall most read news item on Armenia Online in 2010 was one titled Armenian Genocide protest in Sydney draws hundreds, media (click here to view).

The story, which included VIDEO and PICTURES,  covered the Armenian Youth Federation of Australia protest at the NSW Turkish Consulate in April, where Armenian protestors were confronted by Turkish anti-protestors.

It was a fitting top story for Armenia Online, considering this event also attracted widespread Australian media coverage on SBS, Channel 7, ABC Radio and Radio 2GB with leading broadcaster Alan Jones .

RUNNER-UP: The brief piece announcing the sad passing of respected community leader Kegham Sarkissian  (click here to view) attracted many eyes to screens. Close behind it were the twin stories covering the 15 minutes of fame of an Armenian-Australian singer on X-Factor, Mher Balian (click here to read) and an Armenian-Australian couple, Sevag and Aleena Jambazian, who won a Morning Show Dream Wedding (click here to view).

 

ARMENIAN LANGUAGE STORY OF THE YEAR

Armenia Online covers news in both English and Armenian.

The overall most viewed Armenian-language story on Armenia Online in 2010 was one covering the sad passing of respected community leader, Kegham Sarkissian, titled Մահազդ - Գեղամ Սարգիսեան (click here to view) .

RUNNER-UP: The second-most popular Armenian-language news item on Armenia Online in 2010 was one covering the Armenian Relief Society of Australia and the 100th Anniversary of the organisation. It was titled ՀՕՄ Աւստրալիոյ Շրջ վարչութիւնը ներկայացուց 100-ամեակի յուշամատեան (click here to view).

 

VIDEO OF THE YEAR

The Armenia Online Multimedia section displayed a wide array of videos throughout 2010, covering Sports, News, Community, Comedy, Music and much more.

The overall most viewed video on Armenia Online in 2010 was titled Welcome to Galstaun College (click here to view).

The video was the first part of a series promoting Galstaun College, the community's Armenian day school in Ingleside.

RUNNER-UP: The second-most popular video on Armenia Online in 2010 was also from Galstaun College; this time one featuring community members declaring their pricde in Galstaun College. It was titled Sydney Armenian Community: I'm Proud of Galstaun College (click here to view).

 

POLITICAL STORY OF THE YEAR

The winner of this category is the same as the winner of the TOP Story of The Year, titled Armenian Genocide protest in Sydney draws hundreds, media (click here to view).

RUNNER-UP: Second was a story from Armenia, which featured a video of President Serzh Sargsyan. The title is self-explanatory Armenia sin-bins flawed Protocols (click here to view).

 

EDUCATION STORY OF THE YEAR

A meeting of community organisations resolved that the community will strongly support Galstaun College into a new era of prosperity. The story covering the meeting was our top Education-related story for 2010 and was titled Community strongly supports Galstaun College's future (click here to view).

RUNNER-UP: Runner-up story was also from Galstaun College, this time covering a visit to the school by Channel 7 cameras as part of the network's coverage of Dream Wedding winning couple Sevag and Aleena Jambazian, who are both College Alumni. The story was titled Galstaun College featured on Channel 7 special (click here to view).

 

BUSINESS STORY OF THE YEAR

The top Business story of 2010 on Armenia Online covered the award-winning feat of Varoujan Jewellers, titled Sydney Armenian jeweller snaps up award (click here to view).

RUNNER-UP: Runner-up in this category was a Fairfax story on the rise of professional Sydney-Armenian singer Natalie Aroyan. The story was titled Armenian-Australian Natalie Aroyan goes big (click here to view).

 

SPORTS STORY OF THE YEAR

Winning the Sports category with most reads in 2010 from an Armenia Online audience was a story titled Broken hand does not stop Darchinyan winning another title (click here to view).

RUNNER-UP: The runner-up sports story was a recent piece highlighting our community's new motor sports champion, titled Alajajian crowned Australian MINI champion (click here to view).

 

EVENT STORY OF THE YEAR

There were a number of events that captured the attention of Armenia Online reader in 2010. The one that had most views, by a nose over a number of runners-up that will be mentioned below, was titled Record numbers, coverage in Australia for Commemoration Week (click here to view).

It had video coverage from the 24 April Commemoration Evening, as well as a wrap of one of the most-widely attended and covered Armenian Genocide Commemorative weeks in recent history.

RUNNER-UP: The following stories are all worthy runners-up, based on the number of views they generated during 2010.

There was Over 1,000 attend Galstaun College Luncheon (click here to view), which was an event in Terrey Hills featuring internationally-renowned singer Ararat Aharonian.

Also attracting many reads was a story titled Keverians help raise funds for ANC Australia office (click here to view), and Armenian Sydney Dance Company serves up Cultural Extravaganza for 1,600 (click here to view).

 

FEATURE STORY OF THE YEAR

kardashian The most widely-read Feature in 2010 on Armenia Online was Kim Kardashian - the Armenian Interview (click here to view).

RUNNER-UP: The runner-up was titled Baroness Caroline Cox sets the standard in Sydney appearance (click here to view).
