Lake Sevan
YEREVAN (ARKA)—The Armenian government decided on Thursday to allocate 9 hectares of lakeside land on Lake Sevan for a new public beach said to be the biggest on the lake, Deputy Nature Protection Minister Simon Papyan told reporters after a cabinet meeting.
According to the deputy minister, there are 11 public beaches on Lake Sevan, with a combined total area of 32.5 hectares.
“The new public beach will be 9 hectares and it will be the largest public beach in the country,” said Papyan.
The new beach will be located near the railway station next to the village of Tsovagyugh.
According to the Nature Protection Ministry, public beaches on Lake Sevan can accommodate more than two thousand people daily. In 2013 150,000 people visited the beaches, up from 100,000 in 2010.
Lake Sevan is the largest lake in Armenia and the Caucasus region, and is one of the largest fresh-water high-altitude lakes in the world. The lake is situated in the central part of Armenia, in the province of Gegharkunik, 1,900 meters above sea level.
The total surface area of the lake’s basin is about 5,000 square kilometers, and its volume is about 34 billion cubic meters. Lake Sevan is fed by 28 rivers and streams.
