Israel’s government unanimously voted on Sunday to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide.

The motion, which will be forwarded to the Knesset to be approved, was put forward by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar who thanked Benjamin Netanyahu for his support and said that Israel had ‘fulfilled a moral duty by recognising the historical truth and rejecting any attempts to deny it”.

He also stated “This horrific genocide, which took place more than 100 years ago and regarding which there is no real dispute over the historical facts, included the murder of 1.5 million people and the destruction of an ancient cultural and historical heritage.”

The proposal will now be brought before the Knesset for a vote to ratify the decision.
