Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman

JERUSALEM—Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, in commenting on the French bill criminalizing the denial of the Armenian Genocide, said he was opposed to recognizing that crime.

“Since its establishment, Israel has opposed the application of the term Holocaust to another war or tragedy. The tragedy of the Jewish people during the World War II is beyond comparison with any other tragedy,” said Lieberman.

“Attempts to turn conflicts and massacres in Africa, Asia and Balkans into another Holocaust are unacceptable. No country other than France has recognized Armenian Genocide by law. Today historical incidents have turned into political disputes. That’s why I don’t consider it right for Israel to face this problem,” the Azerbaijan Press Agency quoted Lieberman as saying.

In December, the Education and Culture Committee of the Israeli parliament—the Knesset—held a three-hour session to discuss a bill, which if passed, would recognize the Armenian Genocide.

The resolution, which was introduced by Zehava Gal-On of the left-wing Meretz party and Ariyeh Eldad of the right-wing National Union party would recognize the Armenian Genocide and designate a national day of remembrance.

The session, which was televised live on Israeli television, was presided over by the chairman of the committee, Alex Miller, and was attended by the Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, which unprecedented in such hearings.

During his remarks, Speaker Rivlin said that Israel has a moral and historic obligation to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

“It is my duty as a Jew and Israeli to recognize the tragedies of other peoples,” Rivlin said according to Haaretz newspaper. “Diplomatic considerations, important as they may be, should not deter us from recognizing a tragedy experienced by another people.”

Coalition government representative Zen Elkin also spoke in favor of adopting the bill, as did numerous Knesset members in attendance. Also speaking in favor of the bill was noted historian Israel Charney.

“I can say that at this time, recognition of this type can have very grave strategic implications,” Irit Lillian, a representative of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, told the hearing on what the Knesset committee defined as the possibility of “the Jewish people’s recognition of the Armenian genocide.”

“Our relations with Turkey today are so fragile and so delicate that there is no place to take them over the red line,” she said.

Eldar, the co-author of the resolution, dismissed the government’s objections by saying, “In the past it was wrong to bring up the issue because our ties with Turkey were good; now it is wrong because our ties with them are bad. When will the time be right?”

Gal-On spoke of Israel’s “moral and historical obligation” to recognize the genocide “especially when we are still struggling against Holocaust denial.” She cited in that regard the adoption by the French parliament of a bill criminalizing Armenian genocide denial.

As I said before - it is not Turkey or US - We must put pressure on Israel & their government. They do not want to hear about another holocaust. We have problems in Jerusalem regarding Armenians & they are more or less being driven out & properties confescated...

Such moralistic comments from someone who is under investigation in connection with business activities he is accused of starting while in the private sector and then continuing those activities once he got into government. He may be indicted on charges of fraud, breach of trust and money laundering. What high personal morals he has to comment on the Armenian Genocide!

We are grateful for some of the members in the Knesset who are in favor of adopting the bill concerning the Armenian Genocide. It should not be forgotten that the Armenian Genocide was the first genocide which happened early last century, where two thirds of Armenians were massacred. The Shoah comes in second position. As for Mr. Lieberman, he is another hypocrite in the Israeli government, where business comes before honor.

What about the Assyrian massacre? The Armenians are shouting "Foul" at the israeli infuriative, disgruntled respond recently echoed by their immoral Prime Minister, yet the Armenians too failed to recognize the Assyrian massacre and its toil on the Assyrian population in Hakkari, Assyrian region (South-East Turkey) where 3/4 of their population was perished in the Seyfo Campaign against the Christian population of the Ottoman Turks.

It's said, " To seek justice, you have to search for the truth."

Please, we need to work together for the recognition of all our lost souls. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Assyrian+genocide&oq=Assyrian+genocide&aq=f&aqi=g3&aql=&gs_sm=12&gs_upl=50203l53687l0l55797l17l13l0l5l5l0l578l2078l3-2.2.1l5l0

Dear Ashur,

Your suggestion to work together leads me to believe that you may not be aware of the the parliamentary declaration of the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia or of the work recently undertaken by the Armenian National Committee - both in Australia and the United States.

In May of 2011 the Hovik Abrahamyan the then Speaker of the Armenian Parliament called for universal recognition of the genocides committed against the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian populations of the Ottoman Empire.

Later in November of 2011, under the Armenian National Committee of Australia initiative and at the urging of the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian communities, seven Australian Members of the House of Representatives declared their support for the official Australian recognition of the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian Genocides.

Then, in December of 2011, under the leadership of the Armenian National Committee of America, the US Congress passed a motion calling upon the government of Turkey to return all churches confiscted during the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian Genocdes to the respective, Armenian, Greek and Assyrian Church authorities.

Furthermore, not a single Armenian government since independence in 1991 has disputed the historical reality of the genocide that befell the Assyrian population of the Ottoman Empire.

Thank you Varant. I hope this clarifies your doubts Ashur about my people & their concern regarding any Genocide & cirmes committed by Turks againt our nations. As Varant stated, we always worked together, to persue our believes & encourge mankind to seek justice especially regarding GENOCIDE. We will achieve our goal, working together, proving the world that Jews were not the only ones with a Haulocast.

Thank you all for all your sincere efforts. It's also said, "Let us gather all fragments, so that there be no one left behind." Thank you Varant Meguerditchian, and also, Herosoohi Vesmadian. Lest not to forget Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan the then Speaker of the Armenian Parliament.

I lost all my family members from my fathers' side, and I am yet not ready to forgive the evilness of the Turks in committing such unforgiving heinous crime of all centuries. This is what I call the first untold holocaust. Thank you all. Keep up the good work so their souls dwell among us. Ashour Youluos Malek Cave Creek, Arizona USA

There is a big fear by the current Israeli authorities that Israel is in mortal peril. Israeli religious extremists have alienated their closest neighors by acting like racial purists. The lack of empathy and harsh treatment of the Palestinian population has created a reservoir of hatred used by fellow extremists on the opposing side. Israelis now looks to the United States and Turkey to save their Nation. Israel has a seige mentality and this is a very dangerous. That said, there are enlightened Israelis and Palestinian who wish for a Common good. When Common Sense prevails and Israel changes its entrenched position, the Armenian Genocide shall be recognised.

And that is what I have been saying all the time. Common sense will never prevail with Israelis & they will never recognize our Genocide. Somehow, nations should speak up about this.

All people of nations whose families and fellow citizens have suffered the oppression of totalitarian regimes, and especially those who are the survivors and the progeny of genocide survivors, have a special role to expose and denounce evil when it shows its face. There is no excuse for the Israeli Knesset to play this silly role of Genocide Denier unless they have something to hide.

As a Jew, I find it very disturbing that recognition of the Armenian Genocide is the subject of a Knesset debate, just as I would find a debate on the recognition of the Holocaust by any country very disturbing. It was the World's complacency to the Armenian Genocide that led Hitler to believe he would get away with eliminating the Jews. Some things, like recognizing injustices on such a monumental scale, should be above politics.

So now Israel has a copyright on the term "holocaust"?

Also as an Assyrian, I agree with Mr. Danny Ginges 100%, including Armenians there were Assyrians and Greeks also being Genocide. As good humenbeings we should be obligated for this noble cause if we are from these races or not mentioned above, that we must speek up for those who can not speek for them selves.
