BAKU—A first official visit to Baku by Turkey’s president soon after election is a tradition, Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ismail Alper Coskun told reporters.

 

He said that the exact date of the visit is still unknown “Because Recep Tayyip Erdogan is not yet officially president; but being committed to tradition, Erdogan said in his statement that he will first visit Azerbaijan,” the Ambassador said.

Regarding the issues to be discussed during the visit, the ambassador said the relations between the two countries are on the rise.

“The goal of making Azerbaijan the destination for the president’s first official visit is to promote these developing relations. I have to note that we are implementing a number of important projects. For example, TANAP, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and we are continuing the work,” Turkish ambassador said.

He also added that the recent tensions in the Artsakh conflict zone may be one of the topics for discussion

Reports on the opening of the border between Turkey and Armenia are nothing more than rumors, the Turkish Ambassador told reporters.

He was commenting on the reports by some media on the possibility of opening the Turkish-Armenian border following the creation of a new government in Turkey.

“Current Turkish President Abdullah Gul’s representative for foreign affairs clarified this issue,” the ambassador said. “I have been an ambassador in Baku for two years, and always answering this question I say that the opening of borders is impossible.”

“Turkey’s attitude to this issue is well-known, and there is no need for discussions,” the diplomat underscored.
