MOSCOW, PARIS (Combined Sources)—The Russian and French foreign ministries expressed concern over this week’s violations of the Nagorno-Karabakh cease fire, as a result of which four Armenian and five Azeri soldiers were killed in separate breaches by the Azeri Army.
“Russia considers further escalation of border attacks unacceptable and will continue assisting the parties to achieve peaceful settlement,” Alexander Lukashevich, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.
“As an OSCE Minsk Group co-chair and Karabakh conflict mediator, Russia urges the parties refrain from using force,” Lukashevich said.
He expressed hope that meeting between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, scheduled for June 18 in Paris, will help “relieve tensions.”
“France, which co-chairs the Minsk Group, expresses its deep concern following the violent incidents on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan which have resulted in 8 deaths over the past few days,” said a statement from the French Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
“There can be no military solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The parties must be fully committed to implementing a peaceful settlement based on the respect of the principles of the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act, notably the non-use of force, territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination,” added the French statement.
