Armenian weightlifter crowned World Champion in Turkey

ANTALYA, Turkey (A.W.)-Armenian weightlifter Tigran Martirosian has won the gold medal in the men's 77kg at the World Weightlifting Championship, held in Antalya.

On Sept. 23, Martirosian lifted a total of 373 kg, having successfully lifted 173 kg in Snatch (which also won him a gold), and 200 kg in Clean and Jerk.

China's Xiaojun Lu came in second with a total of 370 kg, followed by Egypt's Tarek Yehia (356 kg).

Meanwhile, on Sept. 22, in the 69Kg women's tournament, Armenia's Meline Daluzyan won the bronze, with a total of 251 kg (112 kg in snatch, 139 in clean and jerk). Russia's Svetlana Shimkova earned the gold medal with a total of 256 kg, and China's Yue Kang won the silver with a total of 253 kg.

In April of this year, Martirosian took home another gold medal in the European Weightlifting Championship in Minsk, Belarus, for lifting a total of 360 kg (165 in Snatch, 195 in Clean and Jerk), beating rivals Krzysztof Szramiak (Poland), and Belarusian Nikolai Chernyak, who won the silver and bronze respectively.

The 2010 tournament spans from Sept. 13-27. The opening ceremony took place on Sept. 16, and competitions began the following day, on Sept. 17.
