An Artsakh soldier runs in trenches at the border with Azerbaijan
“The increased number of ceasefire violations at the line of contact has claimed the lives of servicemen. There are also reports about casualties among peaceful civilians,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Further escalation will inevitably lead to negative consequences for the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. It may seriously complicate the realization of the agreements reached at the Armenian-Azerbaijani summit in Vienna on November 19, 2013.”
Russia urges the parties to the conflict to take additional measures to stabilize the situation, including by implementing existing provisions in the ceasefire agreement signed in 1995.
“The reported death of an Armenian soldier is tragic,” the US Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick said in a Twitter post after reports revealed the killing of another Armenian soldier by Azeri snipers.
“The recent escalation – with deaths on both sides – damages prospects for peace,” Warlick added, echoing the policy of parity that the Minsk Group Co-Chairs have maintained throughout this latest spell of Azeri aggression.
Armenian soldier Karen Galstyan, born in 1994, died of gunshot wounds from Azeri sniper fire on Jan. 28.
