BAKU—Azerbaijani authorities protested angrily on Thursday when it was revealed to them that Google Maps labels the territories of Artsakh as the Artsakh Republic, calling it “another provocation against Azerbaijan.”

Azerbaijan’s National Academy of Sciences informed government authorities that, since Wednesday, names in Nagorno-Karabakh were being displayed in Armenian in addition to Azeri and English and that the name “Artsakh Republic” was being displayed in English.

The Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences itself posted an announcement on its website condemning Google’s choice of nomenclature.

Azeri authorities noted that this is not the first instance that they have been offended by Google’s choice of giving Armenian territories their Armenian names. Similar decisions by Google have been reversed in the past due to intense pressure from Azerbaijan.

“With regret, we would like to say that such provocative acts are periodically taking place on the part of Google,” an official statement said.
