YEREVAN (News.am)—The case involving the brutal murder of the Avetisyan family in Gyumri earlier this year by a Russian soldier stationed in Armenia has been handed over to Armenia’s Investigation Committee.
President Serzh Sarkisian on Friday received a delegation headed by Maksim Sokolov, Russian Transport Minister and Chairman of the Armenia-Russia Inter-governmental Commission on Economic Cooperation.
During the meeting, Sarkisian thanked Russian law enforcement agencies, in particular the prosecutor’s office, for cooperating with Armenian officials on the criminal case.
Sarkisian added that the decision to hand over the proceedings to Armenia’s Investigation Committee and to continue the investigation by Armenian authorities reflected the spirit of friendship between Armenia and Russia, and is in accordance with the provisions of the agreement on Russian military presence in Armenia.
Six members of the Avetisyan family—including a two-year-old girl—were shot dead, and a six-month-old boy was wounded in their home in Gyumri on January 12. The baby boy died on January 19.
Valery Permyakov, a serviceman of the 102nd Russian Military Base in Gyumri, stands accused of the crime. Permyakov has been charged under Russian law with the murder of more than two people and desertion with a service weapon. Another criminal case was opened by Armenia’s Investigation Committee.
