YEREVAN (Arka)—Armenian president Serzh Sarkisian has appointed Armen Gevorkyan as secretary of the National Security Council on June 6. Armen Gevorgyan held previously various senior positions in the government, the last one being Deputy Prime Minister.

Introducing Gevorkyan to senior officials of the National Security Council, which is an advisory body, Sarkisian said he has sufficient experience to properly perform the complicated duties of the National Security Council secretary.

“I have known Armen Gevorgyan for almost 20 years and I do not remember a single instance when he would have found it difficult to perform his duties,” Sarkisian said.

The position has been vacant since April 2014, when its former secretary Arthur Baghdasaryan, the head of Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) party, resigned.

Armen Gevorgyan was born in 1973 in Yerevan. In 1993 he graduated from the Institute of Civil Service in Russian St. Petersburg. From 1993-1996 he was a post-graduate student at the Herzen Russian Pedagogical University. In 1995-1996 he studied at University of Twente (Netherlands) to obtain Master’s degree.

His previous positions include Assistant to the Prime Minister, First Assistant to the President, Chief of Presidential Staff, Secretary of the National Security Council, and Deputy Prime Minister. He also served as head of Initiatives for Development of Armenia, a charity fund established by Russian–Armenian businessman and philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan. In 2015, he resigned to study at Harvard University.
