Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan said on Monday that he and his team were threatened by an Azerbaijani soldier who aimed his gun at them while they were driving on the M2 interstate highway in the Syunik Province.

“Last week, we became convinced by our own experience that the presence of Azerbaijani servicemen on the roads between Armenia’s Syunik province is a violation of the right to life and freedom of movement of people,” said Tatoyan in a statement.

The Human Rights Defender explained that when he and his team were on their way back from visiting Kapan and Tegh in Armenia’s Syunik province (on the M2 Interstate road), they stopped what he said was one to two minutes in an area where the Azerbaijani armed forces servicemen have advanced.

Tatoyan published a photo (see above) that illustrates one of the Azerbaijani locations in the section of the road between the village of Shurnukh near Goris and the Davit Bek village near Kapan.

“Once we had stopped, an Azerbaijani soldier noticed us, he entered his hut, immediately came back with his rifle and pointed it at us,” explained Tatoyan, who added that during another stop, the Azerbaijani armed servicemen “started making restless movements, following us with binoculars, then they started whistling and clamoring.”

Tatoyan explained that the stops made by his team was to understand what would happen “if, for some objective reason, for example, a civilian’s car malfunctions or there are health issues.”

Another photo (see above) published by Tatoryan shows the Azerbaijani location between the two village as captured by Google Earth.

He reiterated his suggestion to create a security zone in the area where Azerbaijani forces have advanced into Armenia’s sovereign territory.
