SYDNEY: The Armenian Youth Federation of Australia (AYF Australia) Executive has announced a Dinner Dance dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the historic Khanasor Expedition will be held during the first ever AYF Australia month this July.

Last week, the Executive revealed that AYF Canada leader Harout Manougian has been invited to join local members of the AYF for what will be a month of strategy and education as the organisation looks to expand its reach in Australia. Manougian will keynote the event.

The Dinner Dance, to be held at the Armenian Cultural Centre on the evening of July 21, will celebrate the achievements of the Khanasor Expedition.

Entertainment will be provided by leading community singer Raffy Adourian, accompanied by keyboardist Tony Akillian. Sevag Varjabedian and Ohanes Ohanessian will also contribute to the program with revolutionary songs.

The Khanasor Expedition (Խանասորի արշավանքը) was when the Armenian Revolutionary Federation decided to attack the Kurdish Mazrik tribe on July 25, 1897 in retaliation to their slaughter of the Armenians who were defending Van in 1986.

The operation was the brainchild of Nigol Touman, after whom the Sydney chapter of AYF Australia was named, alongside "Khanasora" Vartan Mehrpanian and Ishkhan Arghoutian, all of whom participated as commanders of the operation along with other members of the ARF, the Hunchakian Party and the Armenakan Party.

Communities around the greater Armenian world celebrate the Khanasor Expedition, because it was a key triumph for the Armenians, both militarily and morally. It restored the confidence of Armenians in their struggle for freedom ahead of what would turn out to be a critical period in Armenia's history.
