SYDNEY: The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Australia Tro Gomide released the following statement regarding the recent destruction of an Armenian memorial church in Deir ez Zor, Syria, which was built to commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide in a part of Syria where countless Armenians were sent to die in death marches.

"September 21st is a significant date in Armenia's history. On this date in 2014, the Armenian people were preparing to mark the 23rd Anniversary of our young Republic's second independence when what occurred was the unacceptable destruction of an Armenian memorial church in Deir ez Zor, Syria.

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Australia Tro Gomide strongly condemns this attack, by Islamic State, on a Memorial Church which was built to commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide in a part of Syria where countless Armenians were sent to die in death marches. Turkey, which is a proven supporter of IS, looks to have played a role in this attack, which came as Catholicos Aram I announced his intention for legal action against the successor nation of the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide.

The destruction of this Memorial will not erase the memories of the over 1 million Armenians who lost their lives on the death marches in 1915.

As believers in the peaceful resolution of the current conflicts in the Middle East, we call on the international community to disarm the fundamentalist forces working within the region.
