By ABC | Sunday, 15 March 2015

ABC RADIO: Last week on ABC Radio, Tracey Holmes spoke to Dr.Stepan Kerkyasharian.

As a contingent of dignitaries from many parts of the world gather on the grassy headland of Gallipoli to watch the sun rise and to mark ANZAC day on April 25, another group of people will also be marking a 100th anniversary, that of the Armenian Genocide.

Officially commemorated on the 24th of April, it marks the death of more than a million Armenians, a part of history that is still fiercely disputed by many Turks.

Today in New York, a global initiative called '100 Lives' will be launched - a humanitarian prize expressing gratitude to the individuals and institutions who helped save Armenian lives a century ago.

George Clooney is one of the co-chairs of the award.
