Australian athletes of Homenetmen and AGBU wear black wristbands to honour Armenian Genocide Centenary

SYDNEY: Athletes of Australia’s largest Armenian-Australian sporting organisation, Homenetmen, are wearing black wristbands at all sporting events throughout 2015 in memory of victims of the Armenian Genocide during this Centenary year.

Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) athletes will also join Homenetmen football and basketball teams in Sydney and Melbourne in wearing the specially-designed and manufactures black wristbands while competing in local competitions.

Homenetmen, which has over 800 athletes, and AGBU with over 70 athletes, will raise awareness of the Armenian Genocide at each sporting game by showing the wristbands, which read “Armenian Genocide 1915-2015”.

Chairman of Homenetmen Regional Committee, Vatche Evanian, remarked: “As the leading Armenian-Australian sporting organisation were are proud to bring our involvement in paying respect to the victims of the first genocide of the twentieth century”.

Basketball teams commenced wearing the black armbands in competition from the first week of February, and football teams recently commenced from the first week of April.
