SYDNEY: Community support for Galstaun College’s innovative Flying Start program was evident last week when the school welcomed a great many parents and children to the Orientation Day.

Children from 4 years and 0 months as at January 2012 can apply to be enrolled in the Reception Class, which covers the NSW Board of Studies Early Stage 1 outcomes that are normally first addressed in Kindergarten.

"This program which was introduced in 2011 has proven to be an outstanding success, with many of the children reading and writing sentences by the end of Term 3," commented Carolyn Blanden, Head of College.

"We know that many parents initially chose the program because it was cheaper than pre-school, or because their children had been in pre-school for some years and needed to be extended. However these parents have been delighted by the progress their children have made in the areas of literacy and numeracy."

She added: "There is no doubt that attending the Reception Class will give each child an academic advantage as they proceed through Primary School, ensuring a firmer foundation and enhancing the opportunities for academic success."
