WASHINGTON (A.W.)-On April 12 Armenian President Serge Sargsyan visited the Washington National Cathedral and laid a wreath at the tomb of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. In his speech, Sargsyan highlighted Wilson's dedication to the Armenian people and commended the Armenian American community for its activism and pursuit of genocide recognition.
Present at the cathedral was ARF Bureau member Viken Hovsepian, who gave a brief interview to Armenian Weekly editor Khatchig Mouradian. "We witnessed President Sargsyan's speech, which primarily honored President Wilson's memory and his friendship with the Armenian people," he said during the interview. "The symbolism of President Wilson goes far beyond the friendship aspect. Wilson is the architect of what became known as "Wilsonian Armenia"-an independent Armenia which included Armenian provinces of the Ottoman Empire. We are mindful of the symbolism of President Sargsyan's visit to Wilson's tomb and his speech today."
"The real expression, however, of this symbolism-and its logical continuation-would be President Sargsyan's rescinding his signature from the Turkey-Armenia protocols," he added.
