Hakop Injighulyan has been held prisoner in Azerbaijan since Aug. 2013.
In 2013, on the night of August 7, Hakob Injighulyan, an Armenian citizen and an army conscript, crossed the Azeri border and was subsequently captured by Azeri soldiers. According to preliminary information, Injighulyan had lost his bearings on the terrain and inadvertently crossed the line of contact.
Injighulyan was subsequently paraded on Azerbaijani television, saying, presumably under duress, that he had voluntarily defected to the Azeri side.
The Armenian military dismissed that statement, saying that the 22-year-old was forced to present a false version of events. It also condemned the televised appearance as a violation of international conventions on the treatment of POWs.
The Armenian defense ministry also offered Baku an exchange of prisoners, but the offer was refused.
The ICRC also met with a family of five Armenian citizens — Yeghishe, Ruzanna, Alfred, Gayane and Petros Gevorgyans – who are also being detained in Azerbaijan. On January 10, 2010, Yeghishe Gevorgyan escaped justice, together with his family, by crossing the border into Nakhijevan. Gevorgyan, 56, was previously convicted eight times for committing theft, robbery, and several other crimes.
