The Archbishop was responding to a question about possible conflict settlement solutions for Artsakh that include ceding territories.
”It’s been speculated a lot recently that Arstakh should cede some regions, or that there should be a referendum, or that they should give us a narrow corridor, and so on,” said Archbishop Martirosian. “But there is no pledge of safety. If they give us a narrow corridor, who will be guarding it? International forces? Well, hypothetically, let’s say we make concessions for unclear promises. Our experience shows the opposite: the U.S. entered Iraq and left it saying everything was peaceful there, but we see the massacre taking place there now. And who says that the guarantee will be fully carried out in our case?”
In a recent interview with Tert.am, Archbishop Martirosian expressed his high esteem for the armed forces in Artsakh and the Armenian youth’s military preparedness. Speaking about the upsurge in violence along Artsakh’s border amid weeks of attacks by Azeri forces, the patriarch pointed to the disproportionate losses suffered by the Azerbaijani military.
The Archbishop said he knows that many of Artsakh’s veteran freedom fighters were eager to go to the frontlines to support the troops on the border.
His Holiness said in his interview that he believes the only and most important mission of Armenia is to ensure the strength of its own borders.
