NEWPORT, Wales—Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev on Thursday met with US Secretary of State John Kerry on the sidelines of the NATO Summit to discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

Sargsyan and Aliyev presented their perspectives on the Karabakh conflict resolution process, with Kerry emphasising the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Kerry called on the two leaders to explore mechanisms for reducing tensions on the borders, also know as the Line of Contact, saying escalation of such tensions hamper the peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Kerry urged the two leaders to work within the framework of the OSCE Minks Group process, adding that political will from both sides would become the cornerstone for peace in the region.

This comes a day after Azerbaijan’s delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly announced its intentions to call into question the effectiveness of the Minsk Group process at the next meeting of the Assembly.

Earlier Thursday, Sarkisian addressed the Summit, challenging NATO on the Karabakh conflict, saying either peace will prevail in Karabakh or the continued threats of war will mar security in the region.
