On Sept. 5, the Consul General presented Armenian passports to those of Kessab’s Armenian residents who had applied for one. Congratulating them, Gevorgyan praised the unbending will of Kessab’s Armenians to live on their soil.
Mayor of Kessab Vazgen Chaparyan thanked the Armenian authorities for the special attitude and care toward Kessab’s Armenians.
During the meeting that followed the ceremony, the Armenian Consul General and the Mayor discussed the problems Kessab Armenians face and what could be done to alleviate some issues.
Kessab, an historically Armenian-populated town in northwest Syria bordering Turkey, was attacked in late March by al-Qaeda-linked extremist militants. Its population abandoned the town and fled to Latakia. The town’s residents returned in June to a battered and heavily damaged town after Syrian government forces retook the city. Many of the town’s Armenian residents moved to Armenian or Lebanon after escaping the attacks and have not returned.
