STEPANAKERT—“We must do our best to have the right of Artsakh’s people to self-determination recognised,” Member of the European Parliament and Head of the EU-Armenia Friendship Group Dr. Eleni Theocharous declared in Stepanakert.

 

The Member of the European Parliament had a number of meetings during her visit to Nagorno Karabakh. She disclosed after a meeting with Artsakh President Bako Sahakian that the main issue on her agenda was the recognition of the right of the Artsakh people’s right to self-determination.

“We must do our best to have the right of Artsakh’s people to self-determination recognised. We reiterated our willingness to work in that direction and support the process,” she said.

Dr. Theocharous visited Armenia accompanied by her aide Dr. Ioannis Charalampidis, Professor Bernard Coulie of the Catholic University of Leuven, and European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (ANC of Europe) Executive Director Kaspar Karampetian.

In Yerevan, the delegation visited the Dzidzernagapert Armenian Genocide Memorial and held meetings with the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Galust Sahakyan, and Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Chairman Artak Zakaryan.

Dr. Theocharous was honored by a medal of gratitude from the National Assembly of Armenia.

The delegation discussed issues related to Armenia–EU relations in light of the latest developments in the region, the crisis in the Middle East, and persecution of minorities in Syria and Iraq. The Nagorno – Karabakh conflict’s settlement process and and Turkish–Azerbaijani aggression against Armenians were also subjects of discussion.
