BAKU (PR Newswire)—Azerbaijan will boycott the Fourth Ordinary Session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly due to take place in Armenia from March 16, citing “aggressive criminal actions” by Yerevan.

Azerbaijan protested the decision to allow Armenia to host the event, accusing Europe of “shielding Armenia.”

The Chairman of the Azerbaijani Delegation to the Euronest PA, Elkhan Suleymanov, also attacked Armenia, saying Armenia has effectively disqualified itself from further European involvement after signing up to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). In light of this, he said, “the fact that the plenary session of the Euronest PA will be held in this country in such a situation proves the approval [by Europe] for Armenia’s political decisions.”

“This organization keeps Armenia under its umbrella and attempts to insure Armenia against any sanctions and responsibility for its aggressive criminal actions against Azerbaijan,” he said.

Recent escalations of violence at the borders between Artsakh, Armenia and Azerbaijan have largely been blamed on Azerbaijan, with the co-chairmen of the OSCE Minsk Group calling on Baku to adhere to its commitments to a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Azerbaijan’s leadership, including its President Ilham Aliyev, have turned to increasingly aggressive rhetoric and military actions, destabilizing the peace process.

Meanwhile, nothing was said of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Council of Europe, widely regarded as Europe’s top human rights body, despite the country having Europe’s worst human rights record.
