YEREVAN (Tert)—An Armenian soldier was killed on the country’s eastern border in a sniper attack launched by Azerbaijani forces, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense said in a post on Facebook.

“Unfortunately, today we also suffered a loss. Private Karen P. Hovhannisyan was killed by an Azerbaijani sniper. We state with deep grief that nothing will go unanswered,” reads the post shared by Artsrun Hovhannisyan.

In a press release put out earlier today, the Ministry of Defense also reported on two attempts by Azerbaijani forces on Tuesday night to infiltrate the border with Armenia.

“Armenia’s political-military leadership has repeatedly warned that aspirations and statements for a military solution to the conflict are self-deceptions, with the subversive acts stemming from logic fraught with unforeseeable consequences for Azerbaijan’s military,” the statement reads.

The defense ministry’s statement also says that Azerbaijani forces launched 109 mortars at Armenian positions on Tuesday night.

“The military and political leadership of Azerbaijan started permanently destabilizing the situation at the Armenia-Azerbaijan state border and in the area of engagement of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic army immediately after the closing of the European Games held in Baku on June 12-28,” the statement says.

Small arms of various caliber, as well as mortar launchers have reportedly been used in the ceasefire violations by Azerbaijani forces.

The defense ministry again stressed the importance of a peaceful solution to the Karabakh conflict and of maintaining the ceasefire along the line of contact, as well as the need to form an atmosphere of mutual trust so that an international investigations can look into the ceasefire violations.
