YEREVAN (Combined Sources) — About 40,000 people are expected to attend the 11th annual Digitec Expo, slated for October 2-4 in Yerevan, the executive director of the Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE) Karen Vardanyan said today.

“We believe that Digitec Expo 2015 will prompt large multinational IT companies to open their divisions in Armenia, as did IBM, National Instruments and other companies,” Vardanyan told reporters at a press conference in Yerevan.

“When we first organized Digitech Expo, we had 30 participants and 4,000 visitors, but this year over 130 companies will partake in the largest technology exhibition of the region, and the number of visitors is expected to exceed 40,000,” said Vardanyan.

The slogan of this year’s exposition is “Festival for Technological Armenians.”

According to Vardanyan, in addition to local companies, a number of leading companies from the US, China, Taiwan, Sweden, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia and Iran will join this year’s exposition. Vardanyan added that a group of technology experts comprised of 100 members will arrive from the US.

“Companies of [the] IT sector of our country will get acquainted with their Armenian colleagues from the US, after which, on October 3, we intend to hold a discussion with the Prime Minister of Armenia about strategies [for] the IT sector,” Vardanyan said.

In addition to the 40,000 guests expected to attend this year’s exposition, organizers of the event plan on revealing a chess-playing robot built by an Armenian IT specialist that will compete against  Armenian grandmasters, which they hope will surprise the Armenian Chess Federation.

In spite of the complicated situation of the world economy, the IT sector continues to develop in Armenia, Vardanyan said. The US is among Armenia’s main partners in the IT sector, which, according to him, creates problems when trying to organizing trips to the US for Armenian IT specialists.

“The restraints that the United States of America imposes on us regarding business trips [for] our specialists to America—it damages them first of all. We hope that political turbulences will no longer cause such problems.”

Digitec 2015 will take place at the Yerevan Expo exhibition hall on October 2-4. The three day convention will include exhibition of new technologies, robotics, a robot festival, and a number of cultural events.

The Union of Information Technology Enterprises of Armenia was founded in 2000 to protect the economic interests of IT companies, to stimulate business development, and promote research in the field of IT.
