Borussia to extend Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s contract

YEREVAN (ARMENPRESS)—The German sports club Borussia Dortmund intends to extend the contract of Armenia national football team player Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

According to the German newspaper Bild, Borussia Dortmund has already extended contract of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and now intends to extend the contract of Henrikh Mkhitaryan. According to preliminary information, the new contract will run until 2020.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was born on January 22, 1989 in Yerevan to Marina Taschyan and Hamlet Mkhitaryan, a prominent striker of FC Ararat Yerevan during the 1980s. Hamlet Mkhitaryan died of a brain tumor at the age of 33 when Mkhitaryan was seven years old. Mkhitaryan’s mother is the head of the national teams department of the Armenian Football Federation and his elder sister, Monica, works at the Union of European Football Association’s (UEFA) headquarters. Mkhitaryan plays as a midfielder for Borussia Dortmund and the Armenia national football team. He is Armenia’s all-time top goal scorer, scoring 16 goals in 52 international matches since his debut in January 2007. His previous clubs include Pyunik Yerevan, where he came through the youth system, Metalurh Donetsk, and Shakhtar Donetsk. Mkhitaryan has been chosen Armenian Footballer of the Year five times, every year since 2009 except 2010. In 2012 he was voted as the best Shakhtar player of the 2011-12 season by fans, and MVP of the Ukraine Premier League. In 2012, Mkhitaryan was named one of UEFA’s Top 100 players by the UEFA European Football Yearbook 2012-13. He was also voted the CIS Footballer of the Year for 2012, making him the first Armenian footballer to be named the best player from a post-Soviet country. He received the award again for 2013.
