STEPANAKERT—Nagorno-Karabakh Republic President Bako Sahakyan sent a congratulatory address on Wednesday to his Abkhazian counterpart Raul Khadjimba in recognition of the 20th anniversary of Abkhazia’s “Day of Liberation” and victory in the “Patriotic War.”
“Throughout its ancient history fraternal Abkhazia has passed through many ordeals, always overcoming them with honor and dignity. The guarantee of all these victories has been high patriotism, unshakable faith and unity intrinsic to peoples of Abkhazia, their readiness to stand for the defense of the native country,” Sahakyan said in his address.
“Today the Republic of Abkhazia is a dynamically developing country, which is confident in future and is steadily strengthening its independent statehood. We are very pleased with all your achievements,” concluded Sahakian’s message, wishing peace and prosperity to “fraternal Abkhazia.”
Like Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia fought a war for independence from Georgia in the early 1990s. Russia recognized Abkhazia’s independence in 2008 following a brief war with Georgia in South Ossetia, as did Nicaragua and Venezuela afterwards. Tbilisi continues to view its breakaway region as a Russian-occupied territory.
Nagorno-Karabakh, which is itself an unrecognized republic, also recognizes the independence of the Republic of Abkhazia.
