The Gabala radar station in Azerbaijan
Russia will not be building a new radar station on the site of a former station in Azerbaijan’s Gabala, as it doesn’t consider it reasonable to build such systems abroad, RIA Novosti reports, quoting Major General Anatoly Nestechuk, chief of staff of the 15th Russian Army Aerospace Special Forces.
“I believe that the national system’s facilities should be in the territory of the Russian Federation,” Nestechuk said.
The Gabala radar station was operated by Russia in Azerbaijan until 2012.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation and Azerbaijan negotiated the terms of the lease of the station, and in 2002, the two countries signed an agreement according to which Russia leased the station from Azerbaijan until December 2012 for $7 million per year.
Armenia considered hosting a new Russian radar system after the end of the lease for Gabala and if Russia and Azerbaijan could not agree on new terms. After failed negotiations, the station was given back to Azerbaijan and all the equipment dismantled and transported to Russia.
