YEREVAN (ARKA)—The Global Terror Index, published by the Australia based Institute for Economics and Peace, rates Armenia as one of the safest countries in the world in terms of potential terrorist threats. The country as ranked at 116 among 162 states.

According to the report, one potential threat for Armenia may be prompted by the involvement of 70 ethnic Armenians fighting against the so-called Islamic State together with Iraqi Kurdish troops.

Azerbaijan and Georgia were ranked 93rd and 71st respectively. Russia is ranked 23rd, while the U.S. came in at 35th.

The Global Terrorism Index provides a detailed analysis of the changing trends in terrorism across 162 countries over the last 15 years. It investigates the patterns of terrorism by geographic activity, methods of attack, organizations involved and national economic and political contexts.

There has been a nine-fold increase in deaths due to terrorism globally, rising from 3,329 in 2000 to 32,685 in 2014, according to the 2015 report.

The global economic cost of terrorism was $283 billion over the past 15 years, reaching a record high of $53 billion in 2014. The prime targets of terrorist attacks have been citizens and private property. Deaths of private citizens increased 172 percent in 2014 over the previous year.
