RIO DE JANEIRO—Armenian gymnast Harutyun Merdinyan has qualified to advance to the final round of the men’s Pommel Horse competition on August 16 during the Rio Olympics. Earning a 15.583 score out of 16, the 31-year-old came in fourth place alongside his fellow competitors.
“I am satisfied with my performances, so are my coaches,” Merdinian said. “I will attempt to even more complicate my exercise in the finals. Everything will be clear at the final.”
Yana Egorian, representing Russia at the Rio games, won on Monday the gold medal in the women’s fencing competition. She competed against her own teammate, Sofya Velikaya, and secured her win scoring five consecutive points.
Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Egorian moved to Russia at a young age and began her fencing career training with renowned fencing athletes.
Houry Gebeshian, Armenian-American gymnast, became the first female to compete for Armenia in her category. On August 7, she performed on the uneven bars and included an original move which she calls “The Gebeshian.”
Although she did not qualify for the final round, Gebeshian thanked all of her fans for their support during the Olympic Games. “What more could I ask for? [I] Loved my Olympic experience. [I] was smiling the entire time,” she said in a post on her official Facebook page.
