YEREVAN (Armenpress)— Five citizens and four customs officials have been indicted in the investigation of smuggling Azerbaijani apples to Armenia.

In addition, three customs officers of the State Revenue Committee have been charged with bribery, said Mushegh Babayan, Deputy Chief of Armenia’s Special Investigative Service.

Investigation revealed that two Yerevan residents— with the support of two Tavush province residents—imported and sold agricultural products in large quantities in Yerevan markets. The products were not declared at the Georgian Bagratashen border or registered with tax authorities.

“Another customs officer has been charged for bribery. Two of the officials have been remanded in custody. Three citizens have been charged with tax evasion and illegal business operations, while two other citizens are charged for being an accessory,” Babayan said.

The investigation revealed that several businessmen have smuggled fruits and vegetables and bribed customs officials for customs clearing.

According to the source, the case will cost the state more than 8 million AMD.
